Hosted by Clever Vintage Clothing, this unique opportunity to nab hard-to-find vintage clothing, jewelry and ephemera was designed to bring even more people into the dedicated circle of savvy shoppers who won't miss a “Helms Show.”
“Vintage is oftentimes considered unaffordable to many, which is definitely not the case,” said Dave C. Vintage Weddings Gain Popularity, Trend Evolves
Clever Vintage Clothing sees a surge in vintage-styled weddings with new methods of incorporation.
LOS ANGELES — May 22, 2011 — This 2011 wedding season brings even more clients to Clever Vintage’s downtown Los Angeles showroom than last year giving the vintage concept an even larger surge in popularity. Meanwhile, the trend of vintage style weddings has evolved with garments reflecting personal symbolism and the theme extending beyond the attire.
“This year’s wedding season has been very exciting, because the movement of having a vintage-inspired marriage ceremony has not only grown but also evolved into something even more sentimental,” said Dave C. Temple, Owner of Clever Vintage Clothing.
According to Temple, last year’s 'vintage weddings' he styled were almost exclusively inspired by a fashion trend and the inclusion of vintage garments was mostly indiscriminate. In contrast, Clever Vintage Clothing’s clients in 2011 have taken a distinctively different approach. Couples this year often come with a desire to include vintage elements that reflect specific individual sentiment. For example, one bride came to Temple with only a newspaper article describing her grandmother’s wedding dress from the 1940s; all photographs of it and the dress itself had been destroyed in a fire. He was able to source a dress that was a perfect fit!
Temple has seen clients executing the vintage style to a larger extent this year as well. A recent client carried an art deco theme from the clothing to even the location by having her wedding take place on a cruise ship. This type of thorough implementation of vintage happens more commonly in 2011 than ever before. "A huge impact can be made by extending the theme from the clothing to the décor and setting, and doing so usually results in tremendous cost savings for the couple," Temple pointed out. Oftentimes, Clever Vintage Clothing can handle styling these additional aspects of the wedding as well as the attire, making the experience simpler for clients.
Clever Vintage Clothing offers a unique one-on-one approach through appointments at its showroom located in downtown Los Angeles at 117 W. 9th Street #918, Los Angeles, CA 90015. An initial phone consultation prior coupled with the in person meeting gives clients individual attention that is hard to find.
Couples interested in having Clever Vintage Clothing style their wedding can also meet Temple and his staff at the next Helms Design District Vintage Boutique taking place on Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lightspace Studio located at 8755 Washington Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232. (10 minutes from downtown, 40 minutes from Orange County, 30 minutes from Long Beach and 15 minutes from Santa Monica). Entry to the event is $5.00; however, 100 free tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis via Eventbrite (http://helmsvintage.eventbrite.com). Clients interested in having a wedding styled by Clever Vintage Clothing may also contact Temple in advance for free admission to the event. Mad Men Inspired Holiday Shopping
Clever Vintage Clothing and its Vintage Boutique Show provide authentic outfits for Mad Men holiday parties.
LOS ANGELES — November 21, 2010 — Mad Men themed parties are all the rage this holiday season, and shoppers are finding the perfect outfits they need from Clever Vintage Clothing at its downtown Los Angeles showroom. With many Clever Vintage Clothing garments actually featured on AMC’s hit drama series, clients know that they are getting authentic attire. Plus, on December 11, 2010, shoppers will have the opportunity to browse wears from an additional 14 vintage dealers at the Helms Design District Vintage Boutique show in Culver City hosted by Clever Vintage Clothing. While the Mad Men phenomenon gained much of its momentum last year among dedicated fans, this year it has caught on in a much bigger way, said Dave Temple, owner of Clever Vintage Clothing.
“I get at least two phone calls and emails a week from customers who found us by word-of-mouth or online looking for an authentic Mad Men inspired outfit for a Christmas party,” Temple said. “Even some men are calling, which is great, because that shows everyone’s getting into it.”
In fact, Temple said many of the shoppers are getting outfits for office holiday parties. With corporate cutbacks, companies have started finding creative ways to create a fun holiday experience for their staff while avoiding the large expenses associated with the extravagant parties of the past. Mad Men parties provide the perfect throwback to an era when "the office Christmas party" was a fun way for co-workers to bond in a more simple way — when Susan in accounting had a few too many cocktails or Larry and Jane were caught making out in the boss’s office.
Shoppers can make an appointment to browse the huge selection of authentic vintage wears Clever Vintage Clothing has to offer at its showroom in downtown Los Angeles by calling (310) 650-8357 or sending an email to info@clevervintageclothing.com.

L.A. Fashion Week Appearance for Spring 2011
Clever Vintage Clothing teams with Louise Green for The Millinery Guild Fashion Show
featuring Project Runway star Mondo Guerra.
LOS ANGELES — October 9, 2010 — Famed milliner Louise Green puts a vintage spin on her couture headwear by teaming with Dave Temple of Clever Vintage Clothing who is supplying six vintage ensembles for which Green has designed specific creations. The head-to-toe looks will include a stunning array of vintage styles in a metallic theme with the unique vintage dresses, jewelry and accessories that Clever Vintage Clothing has supplied, which are designed to set off the amazing artistry of Louise Green's Millinery. These will grace the runway on October 15, 2010 when The Millinery Guild of Southern California presents their Spring 2011 millinery collections titled “Hollywood Legacy” in conjunction with the Los Angeles Fashion Week.
“Hollywood Legacy” will feature members of the guild including Mondo Guerra who is a current contestant on Project Runway. Additional Millinery Guild members showing will be designers Anita Hopkins, Ignatius Creegan and up and coming designer Gladys Tamez. A trained milliner himself, Dave Temple recently took top honors at Los Angeles' "Project Hatway" held in conjunction with the L.A. County Fair's "Tapestry" presentation, making him and Clever Vintage Clothing a natural fit for this exciting pairing with Louise Green.
The Millinery Guild of Southern California was founded in January of 2010 by S. "Montez" Murphy, who has designed hats for 20 years. The mission of the guild is to foster interest in hats, millinery and hat wearing. This is achieved through lectures, instructional workshops and a variety of classes in all aspects of traditional and contemporary millinery. The guild also sponsors charity events, sales and demonstrations that enable our members to enhance their skills and share their expertise through public sales and exhibits.
The presentation will take place in the historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel Crystal Ballroom, site of the 1942 Oscars, starting at 7 p.m. There will be a cash bar. Parking is available at the hotel or across the street at Pershing Square ($6.60). Attendance is free but a request for reservations is required. The Millennium Biltmore Hotel is located at 506 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90071.

Vintage Dealers Band for Form New Outlet
Top designers and dealers from Los Angeles area set up a new type of show for collectors and enthusiasts.
CULVER CITY — August 4, 2010 — This spring, a group of vintage clothing dealers in the Los Angeles area led by Dave Temple of Clever Vintage Clothing banded together to create a new type of outlet for vintage enthusiasts to shop. They call it a Vintage Boutique. The concept was to create a small gathering of independent dealers to share the period wares with their frequent collectors.
“Due to the uncertainty in the marketplace with websites like eBay.com and Etsy.com, we formed a new type of show,” he said. “Our event is unlike pop-up shops and trunk shows. They’re more personal and relaxed.”
It worked. June’s inaugural show made up of 12 individually selected dealers and designers drew in an attendance of over 100 people, which even included a young hip crowd. It gave specially invited collectors the chance to browse classic, designer and repurposed wears in an intimate environment called the LightSpace Studio in the Helm’s Design District in Culver City.
Because of the positive response they received from the first show, the second show, which is being held on September 25, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the same location will be free and open to the public. While the focus is on vintage clothing, some vendors will also sell vintage accessories and other “smalls.”
The show has also expanded to include more booths, so new designers and dealers who would like to participate are welcome to join in on a first come first serve basis; however, reservations are quickly running out because Temple wants to retain the small personal feel. Several of the same vendors will return including Timeless Vixen (TimelessVixen.com).
“I knew I’d be back as soon as we finished the first show,” said Lauren Lepire of Timeless Vixen. “It was a well organized, comfortable event with quality merchandise in a space that was perfect for collectors to shop in — well-lit with natural lighting, plenty of space, nice dressing areas and air-conditioned.”
Temple added that the show will retain its comfortable and intimate environment that many customers complimented, and Café Max will again provide a scrumptious selection of food for purchase at the event.
The LightSpace Studio is located at 8755 Washington Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232. Something Old and Something New
Brides-to-be find their own individuality in vintage weddings styled with period wears from Clever Vintage Clothing.
LOS ANGELES — May 24, 2010 — Modern-day brides frequently turn to the past these days to give their very special day a splash of individuality by dressing their participants in vintage wears from Clever Vintage Clothing. The owner of this 19-year-old Los Angeles establishment, Dave C. Temple, said it’s becoming the bread-and-butter of his business.
“I meet at least one upcoming bride at each trade show who inquires about us outfitting either a handful or all of the people in her wedding in vintage clothing,” he said. “Many times it’s the artistic or alternative types, but more and more lately, it’s just someone who wants their wedding to be distinctive. I’ve outfitted three vintage weddings in the past five months — and that was in the off season.”
There’s a misconception that vintage weddings have to be shockingly different, Temple said. With appropriate styling and selection, the vintage aspect can be understated but still make a big difference. Temple said that the final outcome does not have to look “costume-y.” Brides can, and often do, combine traditional style clothing with only a selection of vintage wears.
There are surprisingly many ways to go about styling a vintage wedding. Temple says his advantage is both his many years in the business along with his fully stocked downtown Los Angeles showroom. A bride can bring her wedding participants to be fitted one day and then they can come back soon thereafter and find that Temple has come up with multiple combinations of styles that can be mixed and matched to fit everyone involved. He said brides often come in with one look in mind and end up with something much more different and unique after he’s taken that inspiration and provided new ideas based on her taste.
“It can be a really fun experience for the bride,” Temple said, “because she often doesn’t realize how creative one can be until I show all the options.”
